About Clannad
Tomoya Okazaki, a cynical high schooler, meets the frail but determined Nagisa Furukawa and gets pulled into her campaign to restart the drama club. Kyoto Animation's 2007 series runs 23 episodes and adapts the school arcs of Key's visual novel.
Watch the series first, then After Story, the 24-episode continuation that follows Tomoya and Nagisa into adult life with its main story ending at episode 22. Toei's 2007 film compresses Nagisa's arc into 90 minutes in a separate continuity, so treat it as an optional extra. The Tomoyo and Kyou chapters are alternate universe episodes for after the main story.
Good to know
After Story databases list 24 episodes: the plot ends at episode 22, episode 23 is a standalone side story and 24 is a recap. The film premiered September 15, 2007, while the TV series was airing, and was Osamu Dezaki's last film. The Tomoyo chapter arrived with 2008 DVD material and the Kyou chapter with the final After Story DVD in 2009.
