About Fate
The Fate core story is one Grail War told three ways. Unlimited Blade Works introduces Shirou, Rin, and the rules of the Fifth Holy Grail War. Fate/Zero then rewinds ten years to the Fourth War, and the Heaven's Feel trilogy closes everything out through Sakura's darker route.
The list below holds only that core path: five entries, about 26 hours. The 2006 series and every spinoff sit outside it, and the notes explain where each one fits if you want more.
Good to know
The order debate comes from the 2004 visual novel, which has three routes meant to be played in sequence: Fate, then Unlimited Blade Works, then Heaven's Feel. Each route replays the same weeks from a new angle, and each one assumes you finished the last. Only the second and third routes got full modern ufotable adaptations, which is why this path starts at part two.
The 2006 Studio Deen series adapts the first route and works as an alternative start or a completionist watch, but it is widely seen as the weakest adaptation and Unlimited Blade Works was built to stand without it. Fate/Zero was written as a prequel for viewers who already knew stay night, so it gives away reveals that Heaven's Feel treats as twists. Watching Zero second keeps those twists intact at the cost of a slower start, since the opening of Unlimited Blade Works assumes some familiarity. Zero-first hooks faster and stays valid; it just softens a few late payoffs.
Spinoffs are all optional and standalone: Fate/Apocrypha (2017), Fate/Grand Order: First Order (2016), the Babylonia series (2019-2020), the Camelot films (2020-2021), Prisma Illya (from 2013), Lord El-Melloi II's Case Files (2019), and Fate/Extra Last Encore (2018). The wider franchise is ongoing, so the status reflects that even though the core five entries ended in 2020.
