About Gintama
Gintama follows Gintoki Sakata, a samurai turned odd-jobs handyman in an Edo ruled by aliens. The TV run totals 367 episodes across four productions from 2006 to 2018, and it swings between standalone gag episodes and long canon arcs like Yoshiwara, Shogun Assassination and Silver Soul.
Release order is the viewing order. The three main films matter: a Benizakura remake, an anime-original final chapter and The Very Final, which closes the manga story. A school spinoff aired in 2025 and a Yoshiwara remake film followed in 2026.
Good to know
Comedy episodes are standalone, so skipping is safe outside canon arcs. Skip episodes 1 and 2 (a meta intro), and watch the 2010 Benizakura film instead of episodes 58 to 61. The 2026 Yoshiwara film remakes episodes 139 to 146 with new footage, so pick one version. The 2023 Baragaki and 2024 Ikkoku Keisei theatre cuts are compilations of older arcs and optional. Some sources split Gintama. (2017) into Porori-hen and Silver Soul arcs; the total stays 367.
