About Higurashi: When They Cry
Higurashi is a horror mystery about a 1983 summer in Hinamizawa that keeps resetting into new timelines. The 2006 series poses the questions across isolated arcs, and Kai (2007) supplies the answers, so those two seasons are the mandatory core.
The 2020 series Gou was marketed as a remake and replays familiar scenes at first. It is not a remake: episode 2 onward it becomes a sequel that assumes full knowledge of the original, and Sotsu (2021) continues it directly. Release order is the only viewing order that works.
Good to know
Gou and Sotsu spoil the original's solutions within their first episodes, so never start there. Kira is a comedy fanservice spinoff and Outbreak is a standalone what-if; both are skippable. Higurashi Mei is a 2020 smartphone gacha game with an original story and has no anime adaptation. No new Higurashi anime had been announced as of September 2026.
