About Initial D
Takumi Fujiwara delivers tofu in an old AE86 by night and becomes the fastest downhill driver in Gunma by accident, then by choice. The main story runs First Stage (26 episodes, 1998), Second Stage (13 episodes, 1999 to 2000), the two-episode Extra Stage side story (2000), the Third Stage film (2001), Fourth Stage (24 episodes, 2004 to 2006), Extra Stage 2 (2008), Fifth Stage (14 episodes, 2012 to 2013) and Final Stage (four episodes, 2014). Battle Stage (2002), Battle Stage 2 (2007) and Battle Stage 3 (2021) are race compilations, all skippable.
The New Initial D Legend trilogy (2014 to 2016) retells the early story with new animation and stops short of continuing the plot, so treat it as an optional extra. MF Ghost continues the story years later with Takumi's student Kanata Katagiri in the MFG races: season 1 aired in 2023, season 2 in 2024, and season 3 was announced to begin January 4, 2026. The MF Ghost manga itself ran from September 2017 to February 2025.
Good to know
Season 3 timing follows the official MF Ghost site announcement; confirm airing status in local listings. A separate live-action Initial D film from 2005 sits outside the anime order.
