About Sword Art Online
Sword Art Online follows Kirito and Asuna from the Aincrad death game through Gun Gale Online and into the Underworld. The main story runs straight through: season 1, season 2, the Ordinal Scale film, then the two-part Alicization arc.
The Progressive films retell the early Aincrad floors from Asuna's side and land best after the main run. Alternative: Gun Gale Online follows a different cast in the same setting, so it stays fully optional and both of its seasons sit at the end of the list.
Good to know
Extra Edition (2013) is mostly a season 1 recap with a short new underwater quest, so it is skippable. Ordinal Scale is a canon original story and later anime material builds on it, so keep it in its slot.
A third Progressive film has been reported as in development, but no release date was confirmed as of early 2026. Gun Gale Online II aired in late 2024 with 12 episodes. The franchise status stays ongoing.
