About Urusei Yatsura
Ataru Moroboshi beats the alien princess Lum in a game of tag and accidentally proposes to her, which starts one of Rumiko Takahashi's defining comedies. The 1981 Kitty Films series ran to about 195 episodes (1981 to 1986) with six films and a run of OVAs, while David Production's remake aired 46 episodes from October 2022 to June 2024.
Newcomers should start with the remake. It adapts selected manga chapters with modern pacing across two 23-episode seasons, and it ends cleanly. The 1981 original stays valuable for its sprawling episodic riffs, its Mamoru Oshii era, and the Beautiful Dreamer film, but its age and length make it a second step rather than a first.

Episode counts for the original vary by source. Most list 195 episodes, while some count 194 half-hour slots because early episodes paired two 15-minute stories, for 213 segments in total. The first 106 episodes were directed by Mamoru Oshii.
OVA counts also vary between 10 and 11 depending on whether recap entries are included, plus a 2008 special. The films are standalone except The Final Chapter (1988), which adapts the manga's ending. No new Urusei Yatsura anime was announced as of September 17, 2026.
