About Moana
Disney's Moana began with the 2016 animated voyage of Moana and Maui to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Moana 2 followed on November 27, 2024, reuniting them three years later with a new wayfinding crew to raise the sunken island of Motufetu. It grossed over $1 billion worldwide despite mixed reviews.
Watch the two animated films in release order, then the live-action remake. Moana 2 started life as a five-episode Disney+ series before Disney shifted it to a theatrical sequel in early 2024, which explains its crowded crew of new characters.

Moana 2 began as a five-episode Disney+ series; Disney announced the theatrical pivot in February 2024. A third animated film is in development: Dwayne Johnson confirmed it in a July 2026 Variety interview, with writers Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller returning. No release date exists yet. In several European markets the character is called Vaiana.
