About Far Cry
Far Cry is Ubisoft's open-world shooter series about ordinary people surviving hostile regimes, cults and prehistoric wilds. Almost every entry is standalone, so order barely matters beyond watching the mechanics improve. New players should start with Far Cry 3 or Far Cry 5, the two entries the series keeps circling back to.
Release order is the recommended play order, and one list covers it. Blood Dragon (2013), Primal (2016) and New Dawn (2019) are standalone side stories that slot between mainline games with no homework. New Dawn directly follows Far Cry 5, so keep those two together.
Good to know
Ubisoft has not formally announced the next Far Cry. Press reports in 2026 described internal projects under the codenames Blackbird and Kodiak, plus a cancelled extraction shooter, but none of that is official, so no future entry is listed here. Far Cry 6 (2021) remains the latest release.
