Need for Speed games share a name and an attitude, not a plot, so release order is the only play order that makes sense. The series breaks into clear phases, from the exotic car showcases of the 1990s to the tuner scene Black Box years and the open world games that followed.
Good to know
Criterion confirmed in July 2026 that it is solely focused on Battlefield, so no new Need for Speed is in active development and Unbound (2022) remains the latest entry.
