About Phantasy Star
Phantasy Star is Sega's long-running RPG series, from the 1987 Master System original through the classic tetralogy to the online eras. The classic games, Universe and the Online titles are separate continuities, so release order is the play order, and the still-live PSO2: New Genesis is the current endpoint.
Good to know
The classics form one timeline, with II set 1,000 years after I and IV another 1,000 after II, while Online, Universe and Online 2 each start fresh. Official servers for the original Online and Universe are shut, though fan servers keep both playable.
