About How to Train Your Dragon
DreamWorks' animated trilogy follows Hiccup and Toothless from first flight in How to Train Your Dragon (2010) through the 2014 sequel to the farewell of The Hidden World (2019). Dean DeBlois directed all three, with the story covering about six in-world years of Hiccup growing from misfit to chief.
The live-action remake arrived June 13, 2025, also directed by DeBlois, with Mason Thames and Nico Parker as Hiccup and Astrid. Watch the animated trilogy first, then the remake. Universal dated a live-action sequel for June 11, 2027, with Cate Blanchett returning as Valka.
Good to know
TV is optional. DreamWorks Dragons: Riders of Berk (2012-2013) and Defenders of Berk (2013-2014), plus Race to the Edge (2015-2018), bridge the first two films. Rescue Riders (2019-2022) is a preschool spinoff outside the main continuity, and The Nine Realms (2021-2023) jumps about 1,300 years ahead to the modern day. Shorts like Gift of the Night Fury and Homecoming are bonus material for completists.
