About Jack Ryan
Five films, four Jack Ryans. Alec Baldwin originated the role in The Hunt for Red October (1990, directed by John McTiernan). Harrison Ford took over for Patriot Games (1992) and Clear and Present Danger (1994), both directed by Phillip Noyce, the only two entries in direct continuity. Ben Affleck's The Sum of All Fears (2002, directed by Phil Alden Robinson) and Chris Pine's Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014, directed by Kenneth Branagh) each rebooted the character instead of continuing Ford's run.
Release order is the recommended watch. The Prime Video series Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan (2018 to 2023, four seasons with John Krasinski) runs in its own continuity and is not listed. Its sequel film, Jack Ryan: Ghost War, premiered May 15, 2026 and streamed on Prime Video from May 20, 2026 with Krasinski, Wendell Pierce, Michael Kelly, and Sienna Miller. It belongs to the TV continuity, not the five-film run.
Good to know
Continuity detail: James Earl Jones as Admiral Greer is the only major cast carryover from Red October into Patriot Games, and even those links stay loose. Sum of All Fears adapts Clancy's novel with a younger Ryan; Shadow Recruit uses an original story, not a novel. Ghost War was directed by Andrew Bernstein from a script by Aaron Rabin and Krasinski, produced by Paramount with Amazon MGM Studios distributing on Prime Video. No further Jack Ryan film had been announced as of September 2026.
