Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul Watch Order

How to watch Breaking Bad, its prequel-and-sequel Better Call Saul, and the film El Camino, including why a fully chronological watch is trickier than it sounds.

Release OrderRecommended

0 / 3 watched

Breaking Bad first, since it premiered first and everything else was built as a companion to it. El Camino works best right after Breaking Bad, before Better Call Saul's final season, since Better Call Saul's ending references it. Note that El Camino technically released in 2019, partway through Better Call Saul's original run, but this sequencing is what most viewers and guides recommend.

  1. 1 Breaking Bad 2008 · series 5 seasons, 62 episodes.
  2. 2 El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie 2019 · movie
  3. 3 Better Call Saul 2015 · series 6 seasons, 63 episodes.

Chronological Order

Following the in-universe timeline as closely as is still watchable. Better Call Saul's early seasons happen first, Breaking Bad happens next, and Better Call Saul's final stretch (its "Gene" timeline) happens last, after El Camino.

  1. 1 Better Call Saul 2015 · series Season 1 through Season 6, Episode 9.
  2. 2 Breaking Bad 2008 · series All 5 seasons.
  3. 3 El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie 2019 · movie
  4. 4 Better Call Saul 2022 · series The remainder of Season 6, from Episode 10 to the finale.

About Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad follows chemistry teacher Walter White's turn to manufacturing methamphetamine. Better Call Saul is a prequel about his eventual lawyer, Jimmy McGill, but it is not purely a prequel: its final season jumps past the end of Breaking Bad to show what happens to Jimmy afterward. El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie is a direct epilogue to Breaking Bad, following Jesse Pinkman.

Good to know

Because Better Call Saul spans both before and after Breaking Bad, a fully interleaved episode-by-episode chronological watch is technically possible but not recommended by most guides. It means repeatedly cutting away from Better Call Saul mid-episode, and several Breaking Bad episodes are themselves flashbacks, which makes strict chronology awkward rather than illuminating. The order below is a simplified, watchable version of chronological order rather than a full interleave.
