About The Golden Girls
The Golden Girls ran 180 episodes over 7 seasons on NBC from 1985 to 1992. Bea Arthur's departure ended it: Dorothy marries and leaves Miami in the May 1992 finale, and the remaining three leads continued on CBS as The Golden Palace, a single 24-episode season about running a Miami hotel. Creator Susan Harris also spun the neighborhood twice on NBC. Empty Nest premiered in October 1988 and ran 7 seasons and 170 episodes to 1995, following widowed pediatrician Dr. Harry Weston next door, and it spun off Nurses in 1991, which ran 3 seasons and 68 episodes to 1994 in Weston's hospital.
Watch the seven Golden Girls seasons first, then the spinoffs in premiere order. Two overlaps matter. Empty Nest season 1 aired alongside Golden Girls season 4, and Nurses aired alongside Golden Girls season 7, with crossovers in both directions plus a storyline that ran through all three shows. Sophia joined Empty Nest as a regular for its last two seasons after The Golden Palace ended.
Good to know
The first Empty Nest pilot aired as a 1987 Golden Girls episode with a different family and was retooled around Richard Mulligan before launch. Nurses connects to the franchise only through Empty Nest, so its crossovers assume that show. Arthur guests as Dorothy in two Golden Palace episodes. Reported crossovers include Blanche, Rose and Sophia on Empty Nest and Nurses, and Weston family characters on all three shows.
