About Happy Valley
Happy Valley aired on BBC One from April 29, 2014 to February 5, 2023: three series, 18 episodes. Sarah Lancashire plays Sergeant Catherine Cawood, a Calder Valley officer raising her grandson Ryan while tracking his father, Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton). Series 1 centers on a kidnapping, series 2 on trafficking and a compromised colleague, and series 3 jumps six years to Catherine's last months before retirement.
Writer Sally Wainwright confirmed the third series as the final one when the BBC recommissioned it in October 2021. The ending was designed as a send-off, and no fourth series has been announced. Air order is the only order.
Good to know
The gaps between series are long: series 2 aired in 2016 and series 3 in 2023, with the story jumping six years to match Ryan growing up. Location filming across Hebden Bridge, Sowerby Bridge, Todmorden and Halifax grounds the show in the real Calder Valley. No continuation had been announced as of September 17, 2026.
