About Luther
Luther aired on BBC One from May 4, 2010 to January 4, 2019, with 20 episodes across five series. Idris Elba plays DCI John Luther, a London detective whose cases keep colliding with Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson), the killer he cannot prove guilty and cannot quite shake.
Luther: The Fallen Sun opened in select cinemas on February 24, 2023 and reached Netflix on March 10. It continues from the series 5 cliffhanger, with Luther breaking out of prison to hunt David Robey (Andy Serkis), so it goes last. Air order is story order throughout.
Good to know
Episode counts: 6, 4, 4, 2 and 4. Series 4 is a two-part special from December 2015. Alice does not appear in The Fallen Sun. A second film, reported under the working title Luther 3 with Elba and Wilson attached, was described as in development in November 2025 press reports; it has no date and stays out of the numbered list.
