About Berserk
Kentaro Miura's Berserk manga began in 1989 and follows Guts, Griffith and Casca from the Band of the Hawk through the Eclipse and beyond. The anime covers the same Golden Age stretch twice, first as a 25 episode TV series in 1997 to 1998, then as three Studio 4C films from 2012 to 2013, reissued as the 13 episode Memorial Edition in 2022.
Start with the 1997 series for its 2D staging and Susumu Hirasawa score, then watch Memorial Edition as the modern retelling, then continue with the 2016 and 2017 series which adapt Conviction and the first half of the Millennium Falcon arc. The 2016 run uses flat shaded CGI that many viewers found stiff, so expect a visual drop. Miura died in May 2021 and the manga continues under Kouji Mori with Studio Gaga from notes he left behind.
Good to know
The 2016 series is a sequel to the film trilogy, not to the 1997 series, though either Golden Age version leads in. No anime past the 2017 season is confirmed as of September 2026; reports of a new Studio Gaga backed project name no studio or date. Continue the story in the manga after the anime stops.
