About Sonic the Hedgehog
Mainline Sonic games are high-speed platformers about Sonic stopping Dr. Eggman, split across eras: classic 2D (1991 to 1994), the Adventure 3D years, the Boost formula years, and the open-zone Modern era from Frontiers on. Stories barely connect, so release order is the play order. New players can start with Sonic Origins or Mania for 2D, or with Frontiers for 3D.
This list sticks to console mainline entries and groups them by era. Racing games such as CrossWorlds (2025), mobile titles, the Boom games and the Wii storybook pair sit outside this list. Where a collection is the easiest buy, such as Origins for the classics, the item note says so.
Good to know
Sega has never fixed a strict Sonic timeline, so release order stands. Sonic 3 and Knuckles play as one combined game in Origins. Generations was remastered inside 2024's Sonic X Shadow Generations, whose new Shadow campaign is the latest mainline content.
No new mainline game has been announced as of September 2026; the June 2026 Frontiers Definitive Edition for Switch 2 is a re-release of the 2022 game.
