About The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games follows Katniss Everdeen from tribute in the 74th Hunger Games to face of a rebellion, across four films released 2012 to 2015. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes (2023) rewinds 64 years to a young Coriolanus Snow mentoring his first tribute.
Sunrise on the Reaping adapts Suzanne Collins's 2025 novel about Haymitch Abernathy's Games, the 50th, and releases in theaters November 20, 2026. It sits between the two prequels and the original films in story order.
Good to know
Sunrise on the Reaping filmed in 2025 with Francis Lawrence directing and Joseph Zada as young Haymitch alongside Jesse Plemons, Elle Fanning, Ralph Fiennes, and Glenn Close. Its November 20, 2026 date comes from Lionsgate via Deadline, so it is firm but still unreleased as of this writing.
Newcomers should still start with the 2012 original: the prequels land harder once you know Snow and Haymitch as older men. Mockingjay was split into two films, so expect Part 1 to feel like setup.
