About Devilman
Akira Fudo merges with the demon Amon through his friend Ryo Asuka and fights demons as Devilman, in Go Nagai's 1972 manga about war, paranoia and the end of the world. The anime versions retell that core story in different ways: the lighter 39-episode Toei series from 1972, the faithful late-80s OVAs, and the 2018 Netflix series Crybaby.
Release order works because each version stands alone, and none of them needs another as homework. Devilman Lady (1998) follows Jun Fudo in a separate continuity, so it sits in broadcast order as an optional extra. Crossovers and the 2004 live-action film are left out.
Good to know
The versions listed are separate takes, not one continuity. The manga (1972 to 1973) is the root story. The Birth and Demon Bird OVAs stop after the Sirene fight, so the manga or Crybaby completes the tale. Mazinger Z vs. Devilman (1973), Cyborg 009 VS Devilman (2015) and the 2004 live-action film are optional and excluded.
