About Resident Evil
Paul W. S. Anderson's six-film saga follows Alice (Milla Jovovich), an original character created for the screen, through the Umbrella Corporation's global undead outbreak from 2002 to 2016. The films borrow creatures and settings from Capcom's games but tell their own continuity, separate from them.
Johannes Roberts rebooted the screen series with Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), a closer adaptation of the first two games. Zach Cregger (Barbarian, Weapons) directs the next reboot, a standalone story about medical courier Bryan (Austin Abrams) surviving one night in Raccoon City, dated September 18, 2026. It uses no lead characters from the games.
Good to know
The games have their own Resident Evil Play Order post on this site; this guide covers the live-action films only. The CG animated films (Degeneration, Damnation, Vendetta, Death Island) follow game continuity and are not listed here.
Uncertainty as of September 17, 2026: the Cregger film premieres at Fantastic Fest today and opens in theaters tomorrow, so its date is firm but it is still unreleased as of this writing. Cregger has said the story is self-contained, so expect a fresh continuity rather than a sequel to any earlier film.
